A lump growing on your body may scare you off the first time you see it but not all lumps are a dangerous sign. One of these lumps is called lipoma. Lipoma is a lump that can appear at any part of the body but the usual appearance site tend to be the upper body, arms, thighs, or neck.

What is Lipoma?

Lipoma is the lump that is caused due to the accumulation of fat cells. As these fat cells start gathering and form tissue, they appear in the form of rubbery and soft lumps. They usually appear under the skin and due to their soft tendency, they may show slight movement when pressed.

According to doctors, a lipoma isn’t something dangerous. Although they are called tumors, they are not cancerous and are benign, which means they will not culminate in cancer.

The causes behind the appearance of these lumps are still unknown. Where it is speculated that they might be caused because of any trauma or accident, it is also said that they might run in the family, a condition that is known as Familial Multiple Lipomatosis. Moreover, they usually appear in middle-aged males and females.

There are some medical conditions that are also associated with the appearance of lipoma. These are mentioned below:

  1.    Gardner’s Syndrome
  2.    Cowden Syndrome
  3.    Madelung’s Syndrome
  4.    Adiposis Dolorosa

Lipoma appears as a noncancerous tumor and can be found anywhere around the body. Usually, these lumps are painless, they are soft in touch and when pressed, they may move under the touch. They appear in the same color as the skin and grow slowly.

At times, lipoma might become painful especially if they appear in the places like joints or nerves. Lipoma that is formed deep inside the body may lead to painful symptoms to the nearby organs. If they become painful, you need to consult a doctor to remove them.
