Smolt & Co X400 Test: A Comfortable French Electric Scooter

Smalt & Co is a French company based in Toulouse. The brand specializes in designing electric scooters and accessories.

The Smalt & Co range is made up of two main families: the Z series, which is very high in range, in which we tested the first representative, Z1000, And the X series, are currently positioned in the mid-range with two models (X400 and X600).

The X400 is one of the most affordable range of electric scooters of the French brand. It has a 400 W motor and a 36 V 10.4 Ah battery that promises speeds of up to 25km / h and a range of 25 to 30km / h. The X400 offers front and rear suspensions and benefits from the all-weather ride brace. Braking is provided by Dio with drum brake and magnetic brake. Smolt & Co promises to assemble this model on its Toulouse premises and systematically check various points after leaving the workshop. The warranty for French brand scooters will reach 5 years if the maintenance book is respected.

The X400 is priced at 590.

The Smolt & Co X400 is a far cry from the Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2. The angular and collected appearance of the French electric scooter gives it a strong look. A strength found when handling a machine. Despite the many moving parts, the X400 enjoys a flawless, non-slip assembly.

Some of these affordable models offer handlebar height adjustment. The X400 allows it to be positioned at 25 cm bandwidth. Enough to adapt to a large number of different levels and find the best driving position. Large riders and minors alike will find a nice spot for their feet on the deck of the Small & Co scooter, which features an 18 x 50 cm rear footrest. The grip covering the surface ensures good grip even in wet weather.

The handles on this X400 are very successful. It is particularly wide (58 cm from end to end), giving excellent control of the stability of the machine, even if one hand releases the handles briefly. The handles can be folded down to save space. Fixing them with screw rings is not complicated, though a little difficult. If tightened properly, the handles will not play, even after prolonged use.

Their ergonomic palm rest is comfortable. The orientation of the brake lever and the possibility of adjusting the orientation of the block to integrate the screen and accelerator as desired, allow these elements to be better positioned for optimal comfort. Easy adjustment using the Allen key. The accelerator is often operated by the index finger, not the thumb. System that allows you to permanently maintain proper grip on the handlebars.

The small backlight LCD screen is readable in all situations. It provides essential information such as instantaneous speed, remaining battery size, distance traveled, driving time or travel time reached. The “Mode” button allows you to move between different functions, while the on / off button allows you to choose between 3 driving modes.

The generous dimensions of the expanded Smolt & Co X400 leave no barrier to its transportation. When the handles are folded down and the shaft is lowered to a minimum, the size of the machine will be very satisfactory. To wrap it, pull a lever at the base of the shaft towards you so that it moves towards the deck. The locking is done automatically at the end of the stroke. The system is simple and you should not find yourself half blocked.

Compact when folded, the X400 is definitely there. However, it is very heavy with its weight of 16.5 kg. The length of the arm caught by the steering column will require the courage to face the stairs on multiple platforms. However, its small size makes it more maneuverable in these conditions than most competitors. For a model who wants to be urban, the inability to roll up the scooter is frustrating.

Smolt & Co guarantees that its electric scooter is completely waterproof and therefore can be ridden in rainy weather. Conditions in which many competitors do not guarantee the waterproofing of their machine. When the weather is wet, large mudguards on the front and rear provide effective protection from road projects.

On either side of the deck, the X400 features 2 acrylic tubes with LEDs. These illuminate the front and indicate the position of the scooter at the rear. The front lights still have little power to use alone in the absence of public lights. The parking lot has been handed over to a crutch.

The Smalt & Go X400 can rely on 3 driving modes: Ego, Normal and Sport. This allows him to adapt to different situations. However, in areas where there is a lot of pedestrians – if such a procedure is approved – we would have appreciated if first gear had controlled the maximum speed even more.

In France, the law states that personal motorized vehicles must not exceed 25 km / h. The X400 is a regulatory compliant, and its meter is inconsistent with specification. In fact, launched at full speed, the French scooter shows a top speed of 30km / h, which is actually only 25km / h. Its 400 W motor is far from oversized for an engine of this size. The Smalt & Go scooter is not the most lively scooter we have ever seen, and it takes about 7 seconds to reach its top speed while standing. Recovery is not its strong point; It does not have a little responsiveness to be completely quiet driving in the urban world.

It’s definitely not fast, but the X400 offers good stability in its endeavor. Thus maintaining its efficiency from the first to the last kilometer traveled. We notice a small loss of torque in the last 25 percent of the battery, but nothing really paralyzes. On marked climbs, the engine shows its weaknesses and needs to be satisfied with losing a dozen kilometers per hour.

The 8-inch wheels are not large, but they provide a wide enough area for the handle to be decent. The front wheel has an inner tube, the rear is packed. The latter makes you lose somewhat of comfort, but is offset by its indestructible design. A definite advantage is that it is positioned on the rear wheel of the engine, which always makes it difficult to replace a damaged tire. The comfort problem is mild anyway since the X400 can count on two shocks on the back and a suspension on the front. There are advantages to some electric scooters in this price range. The driving facility is really there, the bumps and irregularities of the road are well absorbed.

The rear position of the engine ensures good road maintenance, especially when starting up when the road is wet. On the other hand, it complicates climbing on a sidewalk, the weight is mainly on the back. The drum is also on the rear wheel after selecting Small & Co to place the brakes. It is completed by a magnetic brake driven by a motor; So the braking is not distributed on both wheels. The brake is easily adjusted using the lever. However, when the X400 starts at full speed it takes 6 meters to fully stop.
