LG 65B1 4K OLED TV Review: LG’s entry level 120 Hz is almost perfect

Sub-pixels of LG 65B1’s OLED panel.

The LG 65B1 2020 uses the same OLED panel as the LG Olet 65 CX TV. Like all OLED TVs, each pixel is made up of four sub-pixels (one green, one red, one blue and one white). The white and red sub-pixels are large enough to enhance the maximum brightness of the panel, while maintaining the color temperature close to 6500 K. Now the angles have been reduced, as is usual with OLET technology. We measured only 22% of the 45% brightness loss and there was no difference in black – this is absolute.

The film quality is just right in Filmmaker mode. The color temperature measured at 6690 K is very close to 6500 K of video quality, in addition there is a constant curve across the entire spectrum. With a gamma of 2.44 on average for the 2.4 target, the gray levels reproduce very well, while colors below the average delta E3 guarantee reliable colors for the source. Finally, as always with Olet technology, the variation is considered infinite. In fact, black is measured at 0 cd / m², although white is measured at 150 cd / m². This variation is even more impressive and allows you to experience all the nuances even in complete darkness.

If the LG α7 (Alpha 7) General 4 video processor is less powerful than LG Old TVs (C1, G1, Z1, etc.) than paper9 (Alpha 9) General 4 AI, it is clear that it is difficult to see the difference in our test footage . This α7 processor does a good job of calibration and most importantly benefits from a highly efficient motion compensation motor – probably just like the C1. Trumotion can still be controlled manually by controlling the dimming areas (T-blur) for 24/25/30 Hz content and 50/60 Hz content. Inserting black images that deceive the retina stability (Oled Motion Pro) without illuminating the “weak” or “medium” mode.

In Cam mode, the display delay is measured at 12.8ms, but LG is offering a new boost option this year with the Game Optimizer panel, which allows you to reduce the display delay to 9.2ms. The frame has less than one delay from the 60 Hz source, so there is no delay between the action on the controller and its impact on the screen. Later, OLED technology is still incomparable in the market, with less than a millisecond, the best LCD TVs can do better than 11MS.

Some modifications to the game mode are required to get the right image. The most important thing is to keep the color temperature to a minimum (Image> Advanced Settings> Color> White Balance> Color Temperature> Warm 50). After all, even in game optimizer mode the TV delivers a good picture.

Unlike the LG CX and LG C1, which have four HDMI 2.1 inputs, the LG 65B1 has only two HDMI 2.1 inputs out of its four HDMIs. Both of these HDMI 2.1 inputs are compatible with all the features of this new standard, i.e. 4K streams of 120 Hz, VRR (variable refresh rate) which prevents image tearing and blur, allowing ALLM (auto low latency mode) to switch to automatic game mode when detected Or eARC for lossless audio feedback. Only LG TVs are compatible with G -Sync – VRR à la Nvidia – and FreeSync Premium (in the non-Pro version, because LG prefers TV to manage HDR layer).

The LG 65B1 looks just like the LG C1. Aesthetically, the only difference between the two TVs is actually the foot. The B1 foot is short and made of plastic, which translates to slightly lower audio performance (see audio section).

The middle leg contains a depth of 24.6 cm. So the LG 65B1 in our reference cabinet measures 160 x 40 cm. It also leaves room for an install Sound bar.

The back of the TV is as simple as possible. We see electricity on the left and connectors on the right and a very simple cable management system on the back of the middle foot.

This TV has four HDMI inputs, two of which are 2.1 compatible (inputs Nos. 3 and 4), two USB ports, an Ethernet port, an optical digital audio output, a headphone output, a PCMCIA (common interface CI +) port, and one USB connector. . Antenna rack and a satellite. It is a DVB-T / T2, DVB-S / S2 and DVB-C tuner (TNT, satellite and cable), as well as a wireless audio device connected to Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac and Bluetooth 5.0 (headphones) Or speaker).

New home screen introduced by WebOS 6.0.

With WebOS 6.0, the home page now displays recommended content and installed applications. There is also some information about the TV (devices connected via HDMI and USB, smartphone, etc.). Major apps available (Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Films, BeIn, Spotify, OCS or Deezer and My Canal from May 2021). Applications start up quickly and recover quickly, but this version seems a bit slower than the previous one, especially on this B1. WebOS 6.0 essentially refines the settings menu, which can be minimized and customized. The system still embodies the voice assistant Google Assistant and Alexa. Two assistants have direct access to the remote control via dedicated keys. The TV is compatible with Google Cast, HomeKit and AirPlay 2. Finally, Magic Explorer allows contextual searches for content on the screen (actor, director’s name, reviewer, etc.).

In terms of response, WebOS is still established as a benchmark similar to Samsung’s Tyson system. The TV starts in just 8 seconds and always takes 4 seconds to wake up. Destruction, on the other hand, now shows a large LG logo, which extends the standby time to 2 seconds.

The new Magic Remote maintains a very low center of gravity, allowing it to fit effortlessly in the palm of your hand, controlling the gyroscope pointer and allowing built-in microphone voice searches. It has a new, current design. The big news is that the NFC integrates with the smartphone to quickly connect with the smartphone to send pictures to the TV – as long as there is an Android smartphone with the LG Things processor. There are buttons dedicated to the most popular streaming services (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney + and Raguden TV), as well as direct access to Google Assistant and Alexa.
