Many people think that eating too many bananas can prove to be fatal, or at the very least, harmful for them. However, that’s not the case. Bananas are healthy fruits that are loved around the world. On top of that, they are packed with lots of nutrients, including both vitamins and minerals.
A prominent study conducted on a participant pool of athletes also learned that when the participants had bananas, their stamina and energy levels improved. This is why the fruit is known as an energy-boosting source.
So, how did it get the reputation for being harmful? Essentially, bananas contain a rich content of potassium. This mineral is required by the body for various functions. Chiefly, potassium is present in each cell of the body and is required for producing an electric charge that helps the cells function properly.
In addition to that, potassium also helps trigger the release of insulin from the pancreas to assist in controlling blood sugar levels. Moreover, the mineral also helps keep the blood pressure in check.
However, an overdose of potassium can result in some serious issues. These include stomach pain, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, and nausea. It is not possible to have an overdose of potassium by over-eating bananas though.
Experts say that you would have to eat 400 bananas a day to build potassium levels that would cause the heart to stop beating. So, the commonly touted figure of the eighth banana being the fatal one is a wrong one.
The recommended levels of potassium intake on a daily basis stand at 3,500 mg. An average banana contains 450 mg of potassium. Hence, a healthy person can consume at least seven and a half bananas before he reaches the 3,500 mg mark.
It is important to mention that some people refrain from taking anything that contains potassium such as people with kidney concerns. Since the kidney does not function at its best, it is possible that potassium may get accumulated. Thus, they avoid eating too much bananas or don’t eat them at all.
Put simply, eating too much bananas is nothing to worry about in the case of healthy adults.
