As time is moving forward, fortunately awareness regarding mental health problems is also increasing. A big role in spreading the word is played by Hollywood celebrities who expose their own problems so that more people know that they aren’t alone – the ships of psychological concerns carry a lot of people.
Some of these celebrities have mental concerns to deal with because of the massive burden of popularity that comes with stardom. While others have always been in the grips of mental disorders and their fame has only amplified their psychological distress. Wondering which celebs struggle with mental illness? Here’s a list of 9 popular celebrities who have mental health problems. Read on to know:
1 – Kanye West (Bipolar disorder)
Kanye West has had some pretty questionable moments making their way to the headlines but perhaps it’s not always his doing. The 41-year-old rapper was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a fact about him that he didn’t reveal until last year on the release of his album called Ye.
Later his wife also confirmed to Vogue that her husband has “episodes,” but they know how to “handle” the situation now. Recently in an interview with David Letterman who hosts the show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, West gave the interviewer details about his experience with bipolar disorder.
He said, “When you ramp up, it expresses your personality more. You can become almost more adolescent in your expression.” He continued, “This is my specific experience that I’ve had over the past two years, because I’ve only been diagnosed for two years now.”
We’re happy that Kanye has a supportive wife who may disagree with him at times but never leaves his side. Hope more people can understand what a serious concern bipolar disorder is and how it needs to be received.
2 – Ariana Grande (PTSD and Anxiety)
Music maestro Ariana Grande didn’t open up about her struggles with anxiety until the 2017 Manchester bombings that turned her happening concert into a tragic event history won’t forget. Grande mentioned that this event was the worst anxious moment that she had felt.
She went underground following it, not releasing any music or being captured in any pictures for a long break. She mentioned last year that she’d been getting therapy for a decade even though it wasn’t until the bombing that she started having physical symptoms such as dizziness and shortness of breath.
In 2018, the star talked about her anxiety on BBC music special saying, “You have ups and downs and sometimes you’ll go weeks at a time where you will be crushing it and there will be no anxiety…and then something will happen that can trigger it and then you have a couple of down days.”
On Twitter, this 26-year-old has been pretty open about her mental condition. To prove to haters that she did indeed have PTSD, the Love Me Harder singer once even shared her brain scan which showed the areas of her brain affected by PTSD on Instagram.
3 – Chris Evans (Social Anxiety)
Captain America might be used to all the attention he has gotten over the period of his existence but Chris Evans, the actor who plays the character, sure is not. He’s easy-going, calm, party-loving and visibly affectionate – but none of this means that in a social setting, he’s comfortable.
Even though we’d think by now he must be used to of the flashing cameras, chasing paparazzi, and howling fans, that’s not the case. In fact, Evans describes attending 30-minute long red carpets as “30 minutes of walking on hot coals.”
His anxiety is so obvious under all those muscles and charming smile that even co-stars are aware of it. Once Scarlett Johansson said, “Chris can be a delicate flower a little bit.” She further added, “You just want to pat his back: ‘Aw, Chrissy. You’re all right.’”
Even Evans’ mum has been open about the “thinker” he used to be as a child. However, the Fantastic Four actor has mediated and even practiced Buddhism which has helped him calm down a bit over the years from what he calls a “noisy brain.” We really do hope he wins his battles with anxiety and somehow, magically, continues playing Captain America.
4 – Adele (Depression)
The Hello singer might have the most soothing voice around to calm down the nerves of even the most disturbed person but her lovely voice is not able to help her own self. Adele has been open about slipping in and out of depression.
For Adele, depression began when she was just 10 years of age and had lost her grandfather. The songster doesn’t have suicidal thoughts, but she does see a therapist very often. She’s mentioned that she has a very “dark side” and that she’s “very available” when it comes to depression.
She also opened up about her struggle with post-partum depression. Talking about how “obsessed” she was with her baby, she said, “Four of my friends felt the same way I did, and everyone was too embarrassed to talk about it; they thought everyone would think they were a bad mom, and it’s not the case. It makes you a better mom if you give yourself a better time.”
Talking about postnatal depression, she emphasized on the need for mothers to get self-care without their newborns so as to be better moms even if they’re labeled bad moms. We couldn’t agree with her more!
5 – Demi Lovato (Bipolar Disorder, Addiction, and Bulimia)
When we put mental illness and celebrities in the same sentence it’s hard to not have Demi Lovato’s name pop up. The Sorry Not Sorry singer has been in the headlines several times because of the difficult times her mental health has dragged her through.
Lovato revealed that she started binge eating when she was just 8 and it wasn’t until she turned 18 that she checked into rehab for curbing the eating disorder. The Camp Rock actress has also struggled with bipolar disorder and has been spreading awareness about mental health problems for a long time now.
She said, “I think it’s important that people no longer look at mental illness as something taboo to talk about.” The singer continued with saying, “The problem with mental illness is people don’t look at it as a physical illness. When you think about it, the brain is actually the most complex organ in your body. We need to treat it like a physical illness and take it seriously.”
Lovato has also expressed her worries that she may be passing on her bulimia to her future children because she believes it’s a hereditary condition. Moreover, Demi Lovato also has addiction issues that have taken her to the hospital as well. We’re praying she recovers and becomes stronger than ever soon.
6 – Camila Cabello (OCD)
Posing to the pictures being clicked by the paparazzi at airports, you’d think that Camila Cabello would be the most stress-free person ever. But no, even this star struggles with intrusive thoughts that don’t leave her be. The Havana singer has pretty bad OCD.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan UK, she said, “Everybody has different ways of handling stress. And, for me, if I get really stressed about something, I’ll start to have the same thought over and over again, and no matter how many times I get to the resolution, I feel like something bad is about to happen if I don’t keep thinking about it.”
OCD doesn’t have a cure, just some treatment plans. However, Cabello, who often finds herself jolting awake because of her thinking process with a racing heartbeat, has learned to tackle some of her OCD. For this, she thanks the support of her family and her being diagnosed with the psychological condition.
Now she works out, meditates, and writes her thoughts down in a dairy every day. The former Fifth Harmony bandmate also has anxiety about which she has been open on social media. Once this anxiety of hers also made her leave a tour with her gang because it was that severe.
7 – Shawn Mendes (Anxiety)
Shawn Mendes, the Canadian popstar who has risen to fame pretty quick is not only known for his music but also for his anxiety. The seemingly shy actor is as nervous on the inside as he appears sometimes. However, for Shawn, anxiety bubbled out as a surprise.
“It was kind of something that hit me within the last year. Before that, growing up, I was a pretty calm kid, super steady,” he said. Anxiety for him has also sprouted out of the rumors that circulate about his sexuality. Mendes is often labeled gay even though he is not which is something that has clouded his brain and given anxiety to him even in the most innocent of moments.
“Maybe I am a little more feminine — but that’s the way it is. That’s why I am me,” revealed the Nervous singer in an interview while talking about the fact that he wasn’t gay but braiding his hair and putting on nail polish weren’t not regular parts of his life because he’d grown up with 15 female cousins.
The 21-year-old’s song In My Blood talks about his experiences with anxiety which when came out resonated with so many people that Shawn couldn’t help but cry. Even though Mendes still has anxiety he believes that getting candid about it is one of the “most important things I’ve ever done”
8 – Pete Davidson (BPD)
The Saturday Night Live star has borderline personality disorder or BPD which he opened up about not long ago. The comedian knew that he had this condition or another even before he got diagnosed based on what his psychologist suspected.
Davidson revealed last year that he’s been a regular visitor of mental health facilities since age 9. His mum called him brave because of the pain he had been through. His mother, Amy, told Vanity, “I used to bribe him and say, ‘If you get up and try to make the day you can go to the city later and do stand-up.’ We had a deal! That’s how he made it through high school. He is one of the strongest and bravest people I know.”
Though he’s one of the people on the television who makes several others laugh, he himself has been through depression. And in return, people have been nothing but unempathetic and rude with him on the internet.
The bullying and mean comments online got so out of hand for the 25-year-old to handle at a point that he shut down his Instagram even. He advices people in a similar position to just not go online. Currently, Davidson is seeking regular therapy and is also taking new medication.
9 – Selena Gomez (Anxiety and Depression)
The Hands to Myself singer is another celebrity whose mental illness has interfered in her life in such a manner that it has manifested itself to the audience as well. Gomez was admitted to a rehab center last year because of the anxiety and depression that she felt following two hospitalizations due to complications from her lupus.
Gomez suffers through mental health problems because of her lupus, the condition that stole her kidney and has one too many times suffocated her. However, Gomez is not someone who gives up – she goes for therapy and takes care of herself too.
She had begun 2018 with great expectations but unfortunately even last year her health was compromised. Talking about this last March she had said, “I’ve had a lot of issues with depression and anxiety, and I’ve been very vocal about it, but it’s not something I feel I’ll ever overcome.”
She continued, “I think it’s a battle I’m gonna have to face for the rest of my life, and I’m okay with that because I know that I’m choosing myself over anything else. I’m starting my year off with that thought. I want to make sure I’m healthy.” Though often in and out of rehabilitation centers, Gomez never pauses when it comes to delivering amazing music and collaborations to fans.
