Let’s admit it a sore neck can be a pain in the neck. It can seriously affect your mood and productivity, making you cringe every time you take your head out of the work you were doing. Several reasons can be behind neck pain.
These include a stressful work schedule, carrying heavy bags, looking into your phone or screen for long hours, or eating inflammation-causing foods among other things. Since our hectic schedules make it tough to take out the time for acupuncture, here are some simple tips that can help provide relief from neck pain:
1. Stretch your pain away
Slowly rolling your neck can significantly help in relieving neck tension. In this regard, drop your head forward and start with slowly circling your head in a single direction. So, whenever you feel that tension or tightness developing in your neck, stretch your neck to feel better.
If you are into a little bit of elaboration over here, then start with rolling your shoulders backward for about 10 times. Next, squeeze the shoulder blades for the same 10 times. In the third step, push your head backward into your hands and hold the position for 30 seconds. Lastly, bring your ear to your shoulder on each side. Repeat this step for at least 10 times.
2. Apply ice or heat to the pain area
You can also work to bid farewell to the pesky neck pain by applying heat or ice to the painful area. Start with icing the area for 48-72 hours. You can apply heat to the area after that. You can do so via a heating pad, warm showers, or hot compresses.
Make sure that you don’t fall asleep with an ice bag or heating pad under your neck as this can lead to skin injuries.
3. Use a pencil to give yourself a neck massage
There are tons of gadgets out there that can help you in times of neck pain. You can always save money though by getting a pencil. Use the eraser attached to its back tp apply pressure on the tense neck area. Use the eraser to make small circles too, this will help give you the needed a massage.
4. Stay hydrated
The discs located between the vertebrae in your spine need water to maintain spinal alignment and disc height. Water is also needed to take off the pressure on your spine. Each spinal disc is about 80% water.
However, as you age, the water content reduces and the disc degenerates. Therefore, by maintaining strong daily hydration habits can help prevent further degeneration of the cervical discs. Therefore, this may help reduce the pain in your neck.
5. Jump into a swimming pool
Several people applaud the helpful role that swimming pools play in providing neck pain relief, easing a stiff neck, and reducing inflammation. To this end, simply get into a pool with warm water. Let the water level up to your neck and simply move around.
You can also squat until the water level reaches your chin, then move back and forth and left and right. For some people though, swimming can be strenuous. In such a case, water therapy can be beneficial.
6. Use essential oils
Essential oils are also helpful for soothing tense muscles. In this regard, you can massage a few drops of the oil into your neck. The essential oils that can be effective in neck pain relief include unscented almond oil or peppermint oil.
Interestingly, peppermint oil is also helpful in calming muscle spasms. Alternatively, you can massage your neck with any natural oil.
